SEARCHING FOR COLOR IN SHADOWS

After her exhibition titled “Color of Shadows” opened last year at Bursa, Nilufer Municipality Gallery N, Sevim Cizer continued her search for “Light-Color-Shadow” in her exhibition titled “Color of Objects”. Meeting with the audience at Izmir IKSEV Gallery between November 19 and December 5, 2024, the artist challenged invisibility with her luster works.

Sevim Cizer, who has been focusing on the theme of “Light-Color-Shadow” for a while, appeared before art lovers with her works on this subject in her latest exhibition. Cizer explains her theme as follows: “The concept of shadow emerges with a concrete entity. If there is no object, there is no shadow. Shadow follows the entity step by step, it is an inseparable part of it. In our language, expressions such as “to be its shadow”, “to follow like a shadow”, “to be silent like a shadow” etc. have been widely used regarding shadow.

The existence of shadow depends on light. If there is no light in the environment, there is no shadow. Daylight changes shadow. Sometimes it comes in front of us and sometimes behind us. Sometimes it grows and sometimes it shrinks. No matter what color the object is, its shadow is colorless.

When luster material is used to produce art objects, it multiplies our perspective on the object, just as we can reach different conclusions when we look at life from different perspectives…

The ceramic works in this exhibition, whose shadows are colored with luster material, are in constant motion thanks to the changing angles of light and the changing perspective with the movement of the viewer. The shadows colored with luster material add a fourth dimension to the works and actively involve the viewer in this adventure.

Isn’t the coloring of colorless shadows with iridescent luster a metaphorical desire to draw attention, a reaction and challenge to invisibility and ignorance? “The Color of Shadows” is an effort to perceive and express a longing for a different world…”

The exhibition content summarized above by the artist is an effort to express her ongoing thoughts and perspectives on human relations and current psycho-social problems in a metaphorical language in her artistic works.
