GTU INNOVATIVE BIOMATERIALS LABORATORY OPENED

The launch of the Biotechnology and Bioeconomy Cluster (BİKÜME) and the opening of the Innovative Biomaterials Laboratory, hosted by Gebze Technical University, took place on February 17th. Zeynep Bodur Okyay, Chair and CEO of Kale Group, also attended the opening and spoke at the panel within the program.
The Biotechnology and Bioeconomy Cluster Initiative (BİKÜME), launched under the leadership of Gebze Technical University (GTÜ) Technology Transfer Office, commenced operations with a ceremony held on February 17th.
This initiative, supported by the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology, aims to establish a circular value chain within Türkiye's biotechnology ecosystem. Beyond being merely a collaboration network, BİKÜME is structured as a holistic model that produces measurable activities, shared infrastructure, and sustainable outputs. Built on a closed-loop structure encompassing everything from R&D to testing and validation, production, and market access, the cluster brings together companies, universities, technology zones, and civil society organizations on a common platform.

The launch event, held at the GTÜ Congress Center, was attended by Darıca District Governor Yaşar Dönmez, GTÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Hacı Ali Mantar, Gebze Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Abdurrahman Aslantaş, Gebze District National Education Director Şenol Pekgöz, Kocaeli University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Elif Öğüt, Kale Group Chair and CEO Zeynep Bodur Okyay, GTÜ Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hasari Çelebi, GTÜ Vice Rector and BİKÜME Coordinator Prof. Dr. Elif Damla Arısan, GTÜ Biotechnology Institute Director Prof. Dr. Işıl Aksan Kurnaz, academics, sector representatives, and students.
Speaking at a panel organized within the scope of the program, Zeynep Bodur Okyay, Chair and CEO of Kale Group, pointed out that biotechnology is a strategic field in terms of the competitiveness and sustainable development of countries, and emphasized that university-industry collaborations strengthen Turkey's innovation capacity.
