ESKISEHIR’S UNDYING FIRE

Being continued since 2015 in Eskisehir, the city with the greatest contribution to ceramic art, the International Eskisehir Odunpazari Ceramic Firing Techniques Workshop is carried out once again after a two year break.

Being continued since 2015, the International Eskisehir Odunpazari Ceramic Firing Techniques Workshop has had a break for the pandemic restrictions lasting two years. Organized for the sixth time this year, the Workshop is carried out by the Esteemed Odunpazari Mayor Adv. Kazım Kurt under the host of Odunpazari Municipality. During the workshop, assistants and municipal staff has set out ceramic tables in Kanlikavak Park, Emek Park (near the kindergarten) and Sultandere Park of Odunpazari. People have made linear decorations on pre-prepared sludge tiles on these ceramic tables and experienced the excitement of shaping the sludge in sludge lathes.

The Workshop was started on 3rd of August by burning the symbolic fire in the Odunpazari Square after the opening speech in the Odunpazari City’s Fire Ceramic Gallery. Several local and foreign ceramic artists and guests of honor are being invited to the workshop every year. This year’s guest of honor was the Ankara Hacettepe University Fine Arts Faculty Ceramic Department Academician the esteemed Prof. Dr. Candan Dizdar Terwiel. She made her presentation titled the “Hamiye Colakoglu Ceramic Museum”. Those participating to the 6th International Eskisehir Odunpazari Ceramic Firing Techniques Workshop were Atilla Cengiz Kilic (Izmir), Azadeh Shooli (Iran), Caner Yedikardes (Ankara), Fikret Aydogdu (Kutahya), Hadiye Guvenates Kilic (Izmir), Melisa Engineri (Ankara), Nabanita Sen, Alias Madhur Sen (India) and Seyhan Yilmaz (Kastamonu).

During the workshop, the participant artists have glazed their works treated with biscuit-firing technique and turned them into splendid artworks with various firing techniques in the city’s fire. Guests who came to watch the workshop in the historical Odunpazari Square, have witnessed several alternative firing techniques such as raku, unglazed raku, sagar, paper kiln, horsehair, copper matte. The ceramic artist from Ankara, Sercan Filiz has taken the responsibility of all the ceramic kilns in the site.


And I gave my support to Odunpazari Municipality by undertaking the Art Consultancy of the International Eskisehir Odunpazari Ceramic Firing Techniques Workshop and the Odunpazari City’s Fire Ceramic Gallery. The 6th International Eskisehir Odunpazari Ceramic Firing Techniques Workshop has ended with the workshop exhibition opened on 7th of August in the Odunpazari City’s Fire Ceramic Gallery.
